Introduction to Pottery and Hand Built ceramics

Instructor: Erik Hertz, potter
Dates: Mondays in December 1st,8th and 15th
(interested groups may schedule a unique date and time according to availability)
Time: 1-3pm or 4-6pm
Cost: $20 per person or $15 per person for couple, 2 friends,  2 siblings or 1 parent and 1 child.
Age: 2-99

For those who have ever wanted to try pottery, but are unsure about committing to a full class, this class is offered as an introduction to hand built ceramics and pottery.

The 2 hour session will meet 1 time. This workshop  allow people to get an idea of what will be offered in a regular class.  Students will be introduced to materials and processes used to make pottery and to how a pottery studio functions. this class includes a beginner project to be picked up 2-3 weeks after class to allow for firing. Interested participants are encouraged to register for a continuing class. Participants should wear suitable clothes for working with clay.

 

Hand building in clay

Instructors: Erik Hertz or Thomas Wight, potters
Dates: Mondays at 7 pm or Tuesdays at 1pm or  Saturdays at 1pm  beginning January 5th
(interested groups may schedule a unique date and time according to availability)
Time: 1-3pm or 7-9pm
Cost: $120 per 6 week class
Age: 2-99

There is something very personally gratifying about holding a piece of clay in your hands and squeezing it into a form of some kind. The clay is manipulated, pushed, pulled and coaxed into something meaningful. The experience of molding clay sculpture and pottery is one that is usually remembered  and treasured for life.

In hand building, students will be introduced to techniques of working with clay. These disciplines will be taught and applied to projects involving pinch, coil and slab techniques. Students will also learn about glazing and firing pieces. intermediate students will move on to more intricate projects  Your class fee includes glazing and firing.


Wheel Throwing 

Instructors: Erik Hertz or Thomas Wight, potters
Dates: Tuesdays at 9am or  Saturdays at 4pm  beginning January 3rd
(interested groups may schedule a unique date and time according to availability)
Time: Tuesdays 9am-11:30 or Saturdays  4pm-6:30
Cost: $165 per 6 week class
Age: 12-99 

The AI&G's Pottery Studio boasts some of the best professional wheels available. Our approach to wheel throwing focuses on proper technique. Understanding the way the spinning clay responds to the hands is critical to successful wheel throwing. Our wheel lessons break down the steps of throwing detailing and explaining them in simple terms.
Beginners should have hand building experience or complete the hand building class before attending the wheel throwing class. Students will learn basic wheel skills: centering, opening, pulling, shaping, trimming and finishing, as well as glazing. As a beginner you will be make basic cylinder, such as mugs, vases, and bowls. As students techniques improve intermediate skills will be introduced and applied to projects. Your class fee includes glaze and firing.
